The actual number
On most mobile networks a call rings for somewhere around twenty to thirty seconds before diverting to voicemail, which works out to roughly five or six rings. The exact figure varies by carrier and can often be changed, though the setting is buried.
On a desk phone or a VoIP system the ring time is usually configurable directly, and the default is often shorter than you would guess.
Twenty-five seconds is not long. If you are up a ladder, gloved, driving, or mid-treatment, it is not enough time to get to a phone even when you want to.
So the question is not how to answer faster. It is what should happen in second twenty-six, and for most businesses the honest answer is currently nothing useful.
Why voicemail does not catch it
A caller with an urgent problem is in a comparison mindset. They have a list of search results open. Reaching your voicemail does not read as you are busy, it reads as this one is unavailable, next.
Leaving a voicemail is also a slightly unpleasant social act. It requires composing a coherent message on the spot with no feedback, and a large share of people simply will not do it, particularly for a business they have no relationship with.
Even when someone does leave one, you have introduced a delay. You hear it an hour later, ring back, and get their voicemail. Now you are in phone tag with someone who has already spoken to two of your competitors.
The businesses that treat voicemail as their safety net are usually the ones convinced their phone is not ringing much. It is ringing. It is just not converting.
What to do with the ring window
Set the ring time deliberately rather than accepting the default. Long enough that you can genuinely get to it when free, short enough that a caller is not listening to a dead tone. Somewhere around five rings suits most businesses.
Then configure what happens next, and make it something other than an answering machine. The simplest version is a forward on no-answer to something that will pick up, whether that is a colleague, a service, or an AI receptionist.
If you keep voicemail, at least make the greeting useful. Say when you will call back and give an alternative that works right now, such as a text number or a booking link. A greeting that just says leave a message wastes the only seconds you have.

After-hours is a different problem
During the day the issue is that you are busy. Outside hours the issue is that nobody is there at all, and that is when a large share of high-intent calls arrive.
Evening and weekend callers are frequently the most valuable ones. A burst pipe, a lockout, a problem that has just become urgent enough to spend money on. They are also the least likely to wait until Monday.
Forwarding out-of-hours calls to something that answers is a smaller change than replacing your daytime setup, and it is where the recovered revenue is most obvious. I looked at why those hours convert so well in after-hours jobs are your most profitable.
It is also easy to measure. Count what comes in outside hours for a month, then count what a covered month recovers. That comparison is usually the end of the debate.
Work out what the window is worth
Take your average booked job value and multiply by the share of callers who become customers. That is what an answered call is worth to you on average.
Then count your missed calls for a month. Your phone log has this, and most business phone systems will show it directly. Owners are usually surprised by the number, particularly outside hours.
Multiply those together and you have the monthly cost of second twenty-six. For a trade with a four-figure average job, missing a handful of calls a month is a serious number. For a high-volume, low-value business it is smaller per call but larger in aggregate.
Whatever it comes to, compare it against the cost of covering that window rather than against zero. That is the actual decision, and it is usually not close.
